What are some alternatives to throwing away an old PC?

I was looking around a storeroom at home and realize that I have three old PCs just sitting in a corner. I can pay to have them disposed of, but what are some other things I could do with them? They range from an old Acer running Windows 95 to a Gateway running Vista (just typing “Gateway” brings up memories of horrible customer service). Any ideas for putting them to some kind of use instead of just junking them?

You can install Linux on them. DistroWatch has lots of great Linux distribution information available.

One of my friends uses an old PC as a dedicated music center. He has thousands and thousands of songs on it, and outputs to a nice receiver and speakers. When people are over, everyone just takes turns picking 5 songs and adds them to the shuffled list. Everybody seems to like it, and it ensures that you are going to hear at least some tune that you like. You could use your Android/iPhone/iPod for the same thing, but I don't like giving a bunch of people access to my stuff. I guess if you are more “grownup” about it, you could use it as a free backup server.
