Why not? It's a really good console. I'm playing mostly FIFA 14 at the moment on my PS3. PS4 is already released, and still there are thousands and thousands of people playing, for example, FIFA 14 every day.
So, my advice is that there is not much difference between PS4 and PS3 for games (I even believe that more people have a PS3 at the moment, only die-hard fans have a PS4).

What i would recomend doing is getting an xbox 360 with a Dual Nand RGH-2 mod in it, these are pretty cheap too. what the dual nand part means is that you can switch between each nand ( 1 for online gaming with the retail flashed nand and the 2nd for the RGH-2 mod on it so you can play games without the discs) these also alow you to install internal hard drives upto 2TB and it is very easy to replace an xbox 360 hard drive, I personaly would wait a few years to get a next gen console as there is most likey going to be some issue that the day one consoles have and Microsoft will release a new gen of xbox one which would be improved and also have come down in price by then :)
I disagree with Christopher on this one. Sony has a history of long term support for its systems. The PS2 was still in production until very recently. The PS3 has a large install base, and there are hundreds of excellent games for it that are readily available at very cheap prices. I just bought Heavy Rain new for $10, for example. There are a number of great series that you can experience for the first time as well, such as Assassin’s Creed, Bioshock, God of War, Dead Space and Mass Effect. Sure, if you have the extra cash to buy a $400 PS4 (+$60 for a game), that would be the way to go, but new games will continue to be released for the PS3 for some time to come, and the existing library is pretty phenomenal. I would not expect the PS4 library to be that great for the first year or so. Sure, there will be a few amazing titles, but it usually takes a year or two before developers figure out how to utilize the full potential of a new system.
