How can I be sure a tape backup is working properly and preserving all of the backed-up data?

We have an older Travan tape drive for network backups at our office. Is there a good way to make sure it is working properly and creating accurate backups?

Kreiley has it right for this question, check your tape backup software.

Your backup software should have a “compare after backup” function. It basically rewinds the tape and cross-checks the backed-up files against the original drive. It will take a while, so I suggest running it after hours. If there are errors, you might want to try replacing the tape before deciding it’s the tape drive itself at fault.
