Why are the drivers almost never up-to-date when Windows automatically searches for new drivers?

I’ve wondered this for a long time. Microsoft would seem to be the perfect source for Windows drivers, yet when I update a driver and check the box for Windows to search automatically, it almost always returns an old, out of date driver. Why is this?

Blackdog has it right, you may want to check the manufacturer's site for the newest driver. Don't depend on Microsoft as they could be quite a bit behind.

Windows uses Microsoft’s driver database, which may or may not include the latest drivers from manufacturers. It does not check the manufacturer’s website for the most current version.
