Is there an easy way to test my network's security?

I'm looking for an easy way to check the security on my network to make sure that we've got all the ports we don't need shut down. Is there a tool that will help me with this task?

As is often the case with computer security, you can’t 100% guarantee that your network will never be cracked. However, taking the security steps can protect you from most threats.
I found "Pure Networks Security Scan tool" an easy way to test the network's security.
Install and Run the scan, and the resulting scorecard provides a summary status of network devices, the router and network, wireless security, and the computer on which you ran the scan. It advises you of the number of issues tested for each category, alerts you to any worrisome issues found. Click View and it gives you a detailed look within each category.
I'm sure there are much more similar softwares that you can find by some googling.

Hope it could help.

A computer network, often simply referred to as a network, is a collection of hardware components and computers interconnected by communication channels that allow sharing of resources and information. Thanks. Regards, hcg diet plan

Hi RomanZ,

Here's some good background on penetration tests that you might find useful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penetration_test

Snippet:

"A penetration test, occasionally pentest, is a method of evaluating the security of a computer system or network by simulating an attack from malicious outsiders (who do not have an authorized means of accessing the organization's systems) and malicious insiders (who have some level of authorized access). The process involves an active analysis of the system for any potential vulnerabilities that could result from poor or improper system configuration, both known and unknown hardware or software flaws, or operational weaknesses in process or technical countermeasures. This analysis is carried out from the position of a potential attacker and can involve active exploitation of security vulnerabilities.

Security issues uncovered through the penetration test are presented to the system's owner. Effective penetration tests will couple this information with an accurate assessment of the potential impacts to the organization and outline a range of technical and procedural countermeasures to reduce risks."

We use LanGuard. Pricing is ok for what it is. But the peace of mind knowing that we've done due diligence to keep our users safe helps me to sleep at night. Nobody in IT wants to work nights and weekends fixing a hacked network if they can help it.

The OSCP is a real life penetration testing certification, requiring holders to successfully attack and penetrate various live machines in a safe lab environment. Upon completion of the course students become eligible to take a certification challenge, which has to be completed within twenty four hours. Thanks.

The ISSAF should primarily be used to fulfill an organization's security assessment requirements and may additionally be used as a reference for meeting other information security needs. It includes the crucial facet of security processes, and their assessment and hardening to get a complete picture of the vulnerabilities that might exist. Thanks.
