Will Steve Ballmer stepping down as CEO Microsoft help or hurt the company?

I have some fond Steve Ballmer memories. Well, ok, just one, but it was pretty epic when he had a one man dance party during the original X-Box release. Beyond the loss of Ballmer’s fly dance moves, will his leaving Microsoft help or hurt the company?

Judging from the reaction of the stock market, most people are firmly in the “it will help” camp. I think the importance of a CEO can be overstated, but they certainly have the ability to screw things up by making the wrong decisions.

However, the important thing here is that you didn’t post a link to the video of Ballmer going full nutter...I’ll take care of that: BEHOLD!

It will help. While Ballmer has been CEO, Microsoft has utterly missed the boat on mobile. That's where the growth is going to be in the years ahead, not in the ebbing PC market. Ballmer made the mistake of being wedded to the ancient Office and Windows monopolies, but the rest of the world has moved on while Microsoft stood still.

He should have been fired at least five years ago. As it stands now, the longer he stays, the worse it is for Microsoft.
