Why did Microsoft remove AutoRun from Windows?

We transitioned from XP to Windows 8 at my office, and beyond the very different appearance, one thing I miss is the lack of AutoRun with USB devices, which was a minor thing, but convenient. Why did Microsoft remove AutoRun?

It's better for security, and for those folks who didn't like it anyway. No doubt some will not be pleased, but it was the right move for Microsoft.

Security. It keeps malware from potentially being installed as soon as you connect a flash drive through a USB port.
