Why is my Android battery life better with WiFi always on?

I have an LG Optimus, and after changing my WiFi settings to keep it on even when the phone sleeps as a colleague suggested, my battery life has improved noticeably. This seems counterintuitive to me, but the results are obvious. Why would leaving WiFi on improve rather than degrade battery life?

Wstark had a great answer. Sometimes you just never know what will help preserve battery life. With things like this, the opposite of what we'd think is true is true.

Basically, because it takes less power to ping a WiFi network than it does for a cell tower, and even when in sleep mode it is still checking for IMs, SMSes, etc. Here is a more detailed explaination, if you are interested:
