How to diagnose sound of failing hard drive?

I have a Western Digital HDD that makes a sound on attempted start up that is a little like one of those European police sirens, three note long. Does anyone know either what could cause this or suggest a guide that can help diagnose problems by sound?

You might want to call WD and see if you can have it fixed. Back up your data immediately, in case the hard disk dies on you.

I can help you on this one. That sounds like a stuck spindle. There is a great page that has audio clips of failing hard drives that I have found to be very helpful in diagnosing problems (and which I just used to suggest it might be a stuck spindle). http://www.datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php
