How to make Java work with Firefox?

I haven’t used Firefox in a while, but there are a few website that I regularly visit that don’t work well with Chrome, so I dusted off Firefox. I updated Java, which had not been updated in a long time, and now I get a message that I need a plug in for Java, but it doesn’t tell me WHAT plug-in. How can I get it to work?

"Many web pages use Java applets for interactive content such as online games. Before Firefox can run Java applets you must have the Java plugin properly installed and enabled. Java is a programming language that can run on Windows, Mac, Linux, and other computer systems. This article will help you install or update Java and get it working in Firefox."
