Are “alternative” search engines really just Google and Bing?

I’ve used a few alternative search engines, such as ixquick and duck duck go (I just gave Alta Vista a go for old times sake), and the results often seem quite similar. Are these alternative really just repackaged Google/Bing searches?

I use DuckDuckGo, it doesn't track you or share info about your search results. It doesn't filter bubble you either, so you don't see "customized" search results (which I hate).

For the most part, yes. For example, if you search “using” Yahoo, you are actually using Bing. However, there is a much greater degree of privacy when you use ixquick and duck duck go. Think of it like searching Google (or whichever search engine they are using) through a proxy. The results may be similar, but depending on the options, you may not be adding to the trail of information associated with your IP address the way you are if you just directly use Google or Bing.
