What drives you crazy when you watch a movie that depicts programmers?

It’s a sad fact that generally, any movie you go see that features your own area of expertise will suffer, because it’s hard to see past the “poetic license” that is used. For example, when I was an undergrad I studied physical anthropology and archaeology, and went to see Congo which had an anthropologist as a character. It was a wretched movie anyway, but the “that’s not the way it works” voice in my head made it even worse. There was an article on ITworld today about the movie Wargames, which make me wonder what do movies do that drives other people crazy when the film depicts programmers/hackers?

You can't take movies too seriously. Hollywood always plays it fast and loose with the truth. Regard them as entertainment, and mindless entertainment at that most of the time. They'll never be accurate or truthful where reality is concerned. It doesn't sell movie tickets.

How fast and easy everything is. A few 300wps speed keystrokes, and after about 15 seconds, “Ok, sir, we have penetrated the CIA’s mainframe.” Seriously, I can’t log on to my bank account as quickly as hacking into secure systems happens in many movies. Oh, and yeah, Congo sucked.
