What to look for in a photo printer?

I'm looking for a good quality printer that will primarily be used by my wife to print photographs. She has taken a number of classes and is pretty serious about it, so I would like to get her something pretty nice, but I don't really know what to look for.

I'd check around for reviews and see what kind of things they rate the printers on. That'll give you a good idea of what features are desirable and necessary in them.

I’m a point and click gal, so almost any decent inkjet is good enough for me. Here is some advice from actual photographers, who also favor dye-sub printers. Hope it helps.

PCWorld ran a feature just six months ago that should be helpful. It's titled "The best photo printers you can buy today" and reviews a half-dozen products. Prices range from $159 (HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer) to $600 (Epson Stylus Photo R2000. I'd read that and then check around online for reviews of anything new since the PCWorld article.
