i made my desktop icons disappear but something went wrong now i cannot get them back

i changed my desktop setting so my fiance and i could sleep together on cam (dont ask).we are seperated by distance at the moment. With the cam on the the screen was to bright so i turned off the desktop icons and changed the background to black and this worked. but i changed it last night and something went pearshaped and now i cannot get my icons back. I have tried to go through control panel to reset it all but it opens a window for CP with nothing in it ,no icons, and when i go onto the address bar in that window it turns the CP window black. if i try to opposite click on the desktop screen it goes to a black screen which in some cases looks like a greatly magnified version of that window becaus it has massive etters in there. But it wont let me grab the screen to move it aroundand see if the icons are there. I also noticed that in idle now the ram is up around 50% usage. I have also tried to open the task manager but i get the same result as the CP window. Also after a bit it drops the window into the shortcut bar at the bottom but still has the same result when i try to open it from there

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279769

"In Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Professional, the new Start menu is enabled by default. When the new Start menu is enabled, the My Computer, My Documents, and My Network Places icons are removed from the desktop. To restore these icons, follow these steps:
Right-click the desktop and click Properties.
Click the Desktop tab.
Click Customize desktop.
Click the General tab, and then click the icons that you want to place on the desktop.
Click OK."

I have no idea what you did. At first blush it sounded like you had just changed the screen resolution, but that wouldn’t account for the problems with the control panel. Perhaps you can restart it in safe mode and try to change the display setting there? Good luck. Tell your girlfriend she owes you a computer if it doesn’t work, Lothario.
