What is the greatest security threat for Android phones and tablets?

I’ve heard conflicting advice about Android security, for example: anti-virus app is essential vs. anti-virus app is worthless or virus are everywhere vs. viruses are rare. What actually is the biggest security threat for Android users?

For Android, yes you may need it. Probably not for other operating systems though as most hackers target Androids. I would say if you're doing a lot of mobile banking/transactions than yes, it's probably a good idea to get an antivirus app. TrustGo has a free app that has great reviews https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trustgo.mobile.securit...

Your best bet is to check the Google Play store for security software for Android. Threats are always changing, so what is a danger now may not be as bad later on. But if you protect yourself, you will hopefully avoid all of the threats.

Honestly, I'd say that the greatest security threat is probably losing your device or having it stolen, especially if you don't use a lock screen. After that, malware probably is the biggest threat. Objectively, I really don't know how much good anti-virus programs do. I've had one installed on my phone for nearly two years, and the only "threat" it had ever alerted me to was a false positive. I'm not discounting that there are security threats out there, but the vast majority of malware is still directed towards Windows PCs, not Android devices.
