I'm thinking of making a switch from being an MS SQL DBA to IT Security Operations. Is this a good move to make?

I'm currently a SQL DBA and SAP BusinessObjects Admin. I'm being offered a role in IT Security Operations. Is this a wise move? What are my options once I make the switch? Where will I find myself 3 years down the road?

I'm leaning towards making the move since I can move out of an operational role and get into something more specialized. Something which will offer me more later. I do not see myself as a Senior DBA 5 years later. Does any of this make sense??

I always recommend that people check the job sites like Simply Hired to see what employers are looking for right now. Find out what qualifications and experience they want. Real employers that are hiring for real jobs can give you valuable career clues and can help you plan your next move.

There are probably more opportunities in InfoSec, and demand is rising for qualified people. DBA is solid too, though, and Business Objectives is a pretty hot. I think you are in good shape either way, and it comes down more to what you like to do. If you decide to make the change to InfoSec, you might want to check out CISSP and SANS certifications if you haven't already - they are pretty much standard.
