I did a little looking around on a couple of Android forums I frequent, and almost all of the relevant posts were about issues with Visual Land tablets, including some with connectivity problems. There weren't resolutions because most of the people had no experience with the brand. To be fair, there were a couple of people that were happy with them, but that was a very small minority. There aren't any developers I know working on ROMs, so even rooting/flashing a custom ROM isn't an easy option. There are some Visual Land tablets (perhaps even all of them) that are variants of the Ployer momo tablets, and you might be able to get a custom ROM for a Ployer momo that will work on the Visual Land, but there is a considerable risk of bricking the tablet.
If you can get a refund, you could get the original version of the 7" Kindle Fire for $159. Refurbished examples can be picked up for around $125. I know that is more expensive, but it is a much more robust tablet that you can be pretty confident will work. $199 will get you a Nexus 7, which would be my choice, but it is a lot easier to type dollars on a keyboard than it is to pull them out of a wallet.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I think the problem is probably your tablet. These things cost $80 and have who-knows-what for components. There are issues with app compatibility and hardware quality built in. Could you ever get a network connection? It could be a bad radio in the device. It could be a firmware/driver issue. Other than the obvious things like making sure you have WiFi turned on and connected, the only thing I can think off is to try a restart, and if that doesn't work, do a factory reset. I like the idea of an inexpensive tablet, but in this case they may have sacrificed too much in favor of a low price.
Thank you dvarian. That's exactly what we thought. No need to apologize, we understand what you mean. We are a family of techies and we debated on an ipad or computer, but for a VERY ENERGETIC 6 year old, the low-cost tablet seemed to be the best way to go. :) Next time, we will go with what we know and stay away from "knock-offs". We have tried everything you suggested other than the factory reset, so we will try that with our fingers crossed. The tablet is still covered under insurance also being that it is only ONE MONTH old so if worse comes to worse we can make a claim. Thank you for your response, it was very helpful. :)
