How can I make sure that the hardware I have is supported by Linux? I know that Linux is much, much better (easier) when it comes to hardware support than Windows, but how can I make sure a given graphics card, motherboard, etc. will work?

I think Canonical has an Ubuntu Certified list on their website, if you happen to be using Ubuntu. You can also check Linux-Drivers.org for links to various drivers and hardware lists.
