What's the best way to learn how to root an Android phone?

My current Android smartphone, an LG Revolution, is almost 2 years old, so since it is due for a replacement anyway, I was thinking about trying to learn how to root it and see if I could get a few more months out of it. I know what rooting is, but that is about it. What is the best way to learn how to do it? I looked at a few youtube videos, but I was hoping to find a step by step guide.

The three sites that come to mind immediately are Android Central, Phandroid, XDA developers (too technically oriented as a first step, and the forums can be pretty unforgiving of ignorance at times).

As the earlier poster suggested, I would check out Android Central. I leaned how to root devices there myself, and it has enthusiastic and generally helpful people on the forums ranging from complete newbies to ROM developers.  Just take your time, read everything until you have a solid understanding of what you are doing, and go to it. Sure you can brick your phone, but that's unlikely if you are methodical about the process. Good luck!
