Why does my network printer require a restart every time we try to print a document?

I have a problem with a printer that is connected to our office network through a USB cable to one of the workstations (which is running Windows XP). The printer almost seems to go into standby after it has been on for a bit. I do a manual restart of the printer and then it works fine. Funny thing is that it used to work. All of the drivers are up to date. What should I do to fix this?

Sorry, I spaced on including the printer model, it's an HP Laserjet, but I can't remember the specific model off the top of my head.  Our office is closed today due to power outages, so I can't check it.  I'll give the suggestion about the bidirectional support setting a try tomorrow (assuming that we open tomorrow) and if that doesn't work I can double check the printer model.  Thanks for the help!

I'd check the manufacturer's site for troubleshooting information. You may also want to try reinstalling the latest drivers to see if that helps. Good luck.

It could be a printer specific problem.  However, I've ran into a problem like this at my home, of all places, where the network consists of two computers and a shared printer.  The way I was able to resolve it was to go into the printer properties menu on the host computer and uncheck "enable bidirectional support".  Give that a try at least.

What kind of printer is it? If we knew the manufacturer and model, we might be able to get an answer from the company. It could be a problem specific to one model.
