How much impact will the Apple vs. Samsung litigation have on the mobile marketplace?

Samsung and Apple are obviously two of the biggest players in the mobile market. I haven't been closely following the ongoing litigation, but I have to wonder how much of a difference it makes either way for those of us that don't work for either of the companies. Does the lawsuit really matter to end users? Is it likely to have any impact on the mobile device market, such as driving up hardware costs?

It will have a direct impact on me!  It just so happens that I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus and my wife not only has an Apple iPhone 4, she is also a devoted Apple fangirl.  We have spent more hours that I like to admit comparing our phones, and trying to show why our choice is the better one.  In the spirit of friendly competition we have bet each other either a trip to a winery (if Apple wins) or a dinner at my favorite Thai restaurant (if Samsung wins).

More broadly, it could mean that the Galaxy Nexus like I have could be pulled from shelves and Samsung could be prohibited from selling them.  That probably won't happen, but it could.

I think we have to wait and see what the final outcome is for both companies. Right now it's a little early to tell how things will end up. I'd like to see a verdict that encourages company to innovate rather than to copy, which seems to be what Samsung and Google have done with a lot of Apple products.

Microsoft, on the other hand, seems to have done some original stuff with Windows 8. That's much better than the blatant ripping off of Apple done by other companies. I have much more respect for Microsoft these days than I do for Samsung or Google.
