How can I access host maintenance mode for Hyper-V?
I was asked this morning how to perform host maintenance on Hyper-V and my less than brillinat answer was, "Hmmm, I'm not sure." Does anyone know how to go about host maintenance using Hyper-V Manager?
Like jimlynch said, I'm pretty sure that you have to use SCVMM (System Center Virtual Machine Manager) to perform host maintenance if you are using Hyper-V manager on a standalone host. I've only used it for Windows Updates, but it was pretty easy once you've right-clicked the desired host and a box pops up giving you the option to start maintenance mode. It will ignore CPU reserves on destination hosts though, so you will have to use the Migrate Virtual Machine Wizard if you want those CPU reserves to remain intact.
"Many Hyper-V and vSphere terms are similar and easy to figure out regardless of your background (mine is primarily in VMware products). One such concept is host maintenance mode, which requires System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) to be in place because it is not supported on standalone hosts using Hyper-V Manager.
The basic premise of Hyper-V maintenance mode is to remove all running (and powered off) virtual machines from the host. Hyper-V host maintenance mode is excluded from new PRO ratings that will aid in future placement or other migration options.
Selecting a host to put in maintenance mode is quite easy via a right-click on the host in question. Figure A shows the quick menu that appears."
