What are some good cheap laptops for workstations?

I have to purchase about a dozen new laptops for office workstations. These are intended to be pretty light use machines, with the majority of their time spent either doing research online or used for word processing. Obviously, this doesn't require the most powerful (and expensive) machines. I'm much more interested in reliability since more likely than not I'm going to be the one getting the call when things go wrong. It also wouldn't hurt for me to be able to turn in a purchase order that comes in under budget. What are some good options I should consider for mid-range laptops?

The Lenovo ThinkPad X130e is pretty good for a cheap laptop.  I haven't looked at any hard statistics, but for cheaper laptops, I've found Lenovo to be a more reliable choice than Acer which is a name that often comes up, but my sample is too small to have any statistical validity.  I could just have been lucky.  There are many choices out there including some inexpensive Compaq laptops which I've also had pretty good luck with, except for battery life (as in "need a new battery" not "need to charge").

Well, you might consider getting some used laptops if you can. Or refurbished ones. Either option might get you some cheap laptops that still work well for your purposes. I'd check to see if the vendor of your choice has a refurbished section on their online store. I know Apple does, and other vendors probably do as well.
