You did the right thing by taking out the battery, which should be done immediately after immersion, but there are a couple of other easy steps that may help. Note the word "may", there is a good chance that a completely soaked phone is done for. Remove the SIM card if applicable. Take off all the covers that you can and pat dry the phone as much as possible with an absorbent cloth. If I know that it sounds weird, but after removing the battery, put it in a bowl of uncooked rice and leave it overnight. The rice will act as a desiccant and absorb moisture. Try to make sure before you replace the battery and try to power back up that ALL of the water is out. Hopefully your final step won't be going to the store and buying a new smartphone!
