What is deep packet inspection?

This a yardstick used to prob a network
Deep packet inspection (DPI) is a network packet filtering, examining the data and header of the packet. DPI can be used for determining if the data might have viruses, spam, or any other specifically set criteria. DPI can be used to distinguish different data types, for example music streaming as oppose to a search engine inquiry. The differentiated data can then be routed to different places, treated in different ways, or just used for data collection purposes.
