How to check activation lock status of used iPhone?

I see posts from a lot of people who buy iPhones off places like Craigslist, then are shocked when they find out the phone is locked and the person they bought it from can’t/won’t unlock it. There is a good chance that many of these were stolen devices that can never be used. How can someone check to make sure that a used iPhone is not activation locked before they buy it?
You can check if the phone is locked online. You'll need to get the IMEI number from the owner. They can retrieve the number by going to Settings > General > About > IMEI.
Once you have the number, go to https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/ insert the number and the verification code.

If you are checking the phone in person, you'll need to have the owner turn off the Fine My iPhone from settings or by completely erasing the device and all data which will require the owners iCloud password to disassociate the device from their account. This can be done from Settings > General > Reset.
