Which VPN Protocol is the best?

When looking at VPNs, I see a number of different tunnelling protocols - PPTP, SSTP, L2TP/IPSec, and OpenVPN. Is there a “best” protocol to look for when selecting a VPN?
PPTP is known to be insecure and NSA leaks reveal it to be fully compromised (easily decrypted).

OpenVPN is the best (or at least most flexible) option if your device supports it. Most proprietary VPN apps are built using the OpenVPN protocol because it allows for extra functionality like IP leak protection, DNS leak protection, etc.

Here's a VPN protocol comparison which should give you a better idea of when to use OpenVPN vs L2TP or PPTP.
OpenVPN is probably the best choice, then PPTP followed by L2TP/IPSec. I would avoid using PPTP unless necessary.
