How does an introvert network for jobs?

Help! I'm a middle-aged IT pro who's currently "between jobs," as they say. I know one of the best ways to learn about job opportunities is to get out there and network, but I just can't (or maybe won't) do that. Sure, I attend conferences and workshops to keep my tech skills up to date, but I'm an introvert, and during coffee breaks I find it really difficult to talk to strangers to make those all-important connections. Plus it all seems so phony -- I might as well walk up to people and say, "Hi, I'm just pretending to be interested in meeting you because I'm hoping you'll be able to tell me about a good job opening." Any advice?
That's a tough situation that so many people face, for someone shy or even if you wouldn't be, to walk up to random people and build a bond in a two minute conversation. There are some tips and tricks you can try to make it flow easier, and repetition always helps. The more you try the easier it'll get.
