Do I need a PS4 online account to play "The Division"?

I just bought Tom Clancey's The Division for PS4 for my boyfriend. We put it in the console and it's saying to log into the PS4 network. Neither of us have an online account. It's also asking for a Uplay account. I have no idea what that is. Can anyone help me out? I feel bad that I bought him this game and he can't play it yet. :(
Yes, I'm afraid so. There are very few PS4 games that let you play online multiplayer without a Playstation Plus membership. It costs about $50 for a year. You also get two free games each month for your PS4 (and PS3 and Vita if you have those), so it isn't really a bad deal, even though not all of the free games are great.

However, you should be able to get a free 14 day trial if you haven't had an account before.

On that page, scroll down to the bottom and you should see options for different subscriptions, including a free trial.

As for the Uplay account, that is something Ubisoft, the publisher of The Division, does. It's a bit of a pain and pretty much serves as a way for them to gather information about their customers, but it is free. After you get set up with PSN and start the game, you will just need to follow the instructions to set up a Uplay account. It works for all Ubisoft games, so you won't have to do it again if you buy the next Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, or whatnot.

Hope this helps. If anything isn't clear, just let me know and I'll try to fill in the blanks.

Thank you so much!! :)
