Why would my computer be eating up my data since updating to Windows 10?

Its a Dell laptop installed with widows 8
Most likely this is due to Windows Update Delivery Optimization feature. When it's turned on (on by default) your computer shares any downloaded updates to other machines, a peer to peer setup meant to make update delivery faster.
To turn of go to Start > Settings > Update &security > Windows Update >Advanced options >Choose how updates are delivered. Turn the toggle to off.
