Does vaultless tokenization security offer benefits over standard tokenization when securing data in the cloud?

With respect to securing data over the cloud, some companies offer vaultless tokenization as a alternative to standard tokenization. Is there any advantage here, or is it mere puffery?
The difference between the two is that in a traditional token vault you utilize a database that stores the value and token pairs, where as the vault-less tokenization doesn't require the storage of the values in a database.
The main difference however seems to be that the token vault can grow quite large, heavy, and slow, as well as expensive.
