How to tell that HDD is about to fail?

I have a couple old consoles (original Xbox) that have built-in hard drives. They were the first console with that feature, in fact. Now they are over a decade old, and I’m curious what warning signs that the drive is about to fail. I know that repeated clicking is a bad sign, but what else should I look for to avoid data loss due to hard drive failure?
Not sure if there's a built in check you can run(I don't believe so), but the general signs of a hard drive failing is like you mentioned clicking or grinding noises, slowness on read/write, and read/wright error messages. If the HD is formatted with FAT32 or NTFS you can connect it to a pc and check the health through device manager, or any tools that you'd normally use for an internal HD check.
