How to enable tap to wake on Nexus 6?

I’ve enjoyed my Nexus 6 ownership, aside from (1) sometimes wishing it was a little smaller, and (2) missing the wake on tap feature that I got used to with my LG G2. Is there a way to turn on “tap to wake” on the N6, or is the feature simply missing?
To follow up on what Sveta said, I don't think it's worth the trouble unless you are already rooted. I'm not opposed to rooting, and actually have rooted most of my Android phones and tablets over the years. You do lose the automatic updates to Android if you root your Nexus 6, I'm pretty sure. It's not a huge deal, since you can install the updates yourself, but it's something to consider.

I also have to wonder if this will be something that the "M" update will activate. Maybe not, but there is a chance. I don't see any reason why Google would nerf tap to wake since the capability is already built into the Nexus 6.
It is not turned on by default, you can enable with a few tweaks by the option is not supported officially. If you decide to go ahead with one of the options, make sure you do a backup (just in case).
There are a couple of option you have, the most common one is to root your phone: take a look at this site, the video has the full walkthrough. Note that you might have problems with future updates and might have to flush the system to the original state. https://gigaom.com/2014/11/24/heres-how-to-add-tap-to-wake-on-your-nexus-6/
There’s also another solution if you don’t want to root your phone, here’s the thread with the directions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/compiled-power-shamu-to-enable-double-t2971463
