What’s the difference between defragmenting a hard drive and optimizing it in Windows 8?

I’m curious; in Windows 8 there isn’t an option to defrag a hard drive, but there is one for “optimizing it” which, by default runs every week. This is the same schedule I had for defragmentation in Windows 7, if memory serves. Did Microsoft just change the name from defragmenting to optimizing for Windows 8/8.1, or does optimization mean something else?
Number6 has a good answer, but here's a link to the Windows 8 support site in case you need it:

It's the same thing, Microsoft just decided to change the name, probably because defragmenting sounded scary to some test group or something.

Relevant: "...Optimize Drives, previously called Disk Defragmenter, runs automatically on a weekly schedule."
