How does the Application Level Firewall on Macs differ from AirPort or other router based firewalls?

Does the OS X firewall provide any meaningful additional protection over router based firewalls, such as that provided by AirPort Extreme?

Basically, if an application is trusted with the Application Level Firewall (because Apple has issued a Code Signing Certificate to that particular app) it is allowed to send and receive network traffic through the Application Level Firewall. In comparison to router based firewalls, it is likely updated more frequently than most and it provides an additional level of protection.
