How to increase battery life and decrease operating temperature of Android phones?

My Nexus 6 gets quite warm during normal use. It’s not really a problem, but it is noticeable, and it seems to get warmer than previous devices I’ve had. Also, considering how large the battery is, a charge really doesn’t last that long. I suspect the two things are related. Is there a way to improve both of these, for lack of a better term, issues? I’ve lowered my screen brightness, but that doesn’t seem to have a lot of impact.
Both battery life and overheating is closely related on the apps you run and how intensively you use the phone. Mostly games, video intensive stuff will overheat the device and kill the battery.
There are a number of settings and habits you can adjust to decrease the effect, such as turning off GPN and notifications from some apps, also make sure to quite out of apps when you’re not using them and letting the phone go into standby mode when not in use. Also check out the battery page under settings to see if a particular app is draining the battery.
