Will Windows Server 8 use Metro?

I'm wondering about the changes Microsoft announced to Windows 8 Server at last week's Build conference. Are they going to add the Metro GUI to their server line? I can't see how this would be a good thing - a server is not a smartphone.

Hi hughye,

I found an interesting blog post about it with instructions on how to turn off Metro in Windows Server 8. I am not sure if it will be there in the final release or not. But here is a link to the blog entry:

http://msmvps.com/blogs/netman66/archive/2011/10/06/windows-server-8-dis...

"This is a SERVER - so distractions such as the Metro UI and the fact that you really, really, really (get the point!) need a touchscreen to benefit from it make navigating very painful.

So....let's disable it for testing anyway.

This only affects the currently logged in user. If you can find it, run Regedit and navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Change the value of RPEnabled to 0 (zero)."

Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server won't use Metro; only Windows Phone 7 uses Metro. However, a Metro-style interface will be available in Windows 8 and Windows Server 8. For the server version, it will allow administrators to customize a control panel with live information that might be useful, or just link the most frequently-used applications to it as a launchpad.
