How do I recover my desktop icons?

I don't know what I did but all icons vanished
Is Show desktop icons option unchecked?
Show desktop icons is unselected. To Fix this just turn that option back on. To turn the option back on , Follow the steps:

1. Right click the desktop.
2. Select View and then Show desktop icons.
3. Make sure the option is checked.
In Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Professional, the new Start menu is enabled by default. When the new Start menu is enabled, the My Computer, My Documents, and My Network Places icons are removed from the desktop. To restore these icons, follow these steps:
Right-click the desktop and click Properties.
Click the Desktop tab.
Click Customize desktop.
Click the General tab, and then click the icons that you want to place on the desktop.
Click OK.

Dniblock has the right answer if you're running Windows.
It should be pretty simple (I assume that you are using a Windows PC, since you didn't say).

Right click on the desktop, then choose VIEW>SHOW DESKTOP ICONS.
