Which tech jobs are in most demand?

There's a lot of talk about how even though we have high unemployment, jobs in the tech sector are going unfilled. Which positions are most in demand? And where are these jobs located?

Most of the companies who are looking for tech workers are on the coasts (San Francisco, Portland, Seattle + New York, Boston). The midwest doesn't have as much need for tech workers judging from the articles I've read and the business owners I know. This will become even moreso as corporations move their applications and data to the cloud, where certain positions will become commoditized on data farms.

That's funny. I read an article earlier in the year that explained there's a great deal of unexpected tech sector jobs in Detroit, as well as other places in the Midwest.

As you might expect, the kinds of positions and skills sought by employers are fairly specific, and include higher-knowledge positions such as data visualization engineers, data scientists and senior level software programmers with skills in big data and "DevOps". Hot topics include Salesforce.com experience and coding skills in C, C++, Ruby on Rails,  Perl, PHP scripting, and Java. Of course, it helps to have an understanding of user interface design, mobile application development, and social networking.
