What is storage virtualization?

What is storage virtualization and how is it beneficial?
This is a nice concise explanation given by Jeff Darcy on Quora:

"Storage virtualization is the addition of an extra layer of mapping between the block addresses (or file locations) that a user sees and the actual physical locations of data[1]. This might be done to pool resources across devices or hosts, as others have pointed out. It might also be done to enable thin provisioning, deduplication, tiering (strongly analogous to virtual memory which might be backed either by real memory or by disk) and so on.

[1] Note that even the "physical location" of a block on a single disk might be misleading, due to bad-block remapping etc."
