Is there an advantage to choosing a version of Ubuntu such as Kubuntu or Xubuntu?

I’m thinking of trying out Ubuntu on a Windows 7 laptop that is sitting idle since I bought an updated machine. I have no experience with Ubuntu, and was wondering if there is a good reason to go with a different version like Kubuntu or Xubuntu (or any other really). I’m comfortable with Windows and I’ve used Android’s command line shell a bit, so I’m slightly familiar with Linux but by no means an expert. Suggestions?
It all depends on which desktop environment you prefer. Ubuntu uses Unity by default, while Kubuntu uses KDE, and Xubuntu offers Xfce.

I like Xfce, but then I'm a bit old school. ;)
