How does Android Pay differ from Google Wallet?

Google is coming out with a new mobile payment system for Android, I assume to compete with Apple. The thing is, I already have a Google payment system on my Android: Google Wallet. What’s the difference between the two services? Is Android Pay just a rebranding of Google Wallet?
I’m still working out the details myself, but as I understand it, Android Pay will be something that developers/companies can embed in their apps, so that you can make in-app purchases or payments very easily. So, Android Pay isn’t really replacing Google Wallet, it is an API that allows devs to enable purchases using Google Wallet (I think exclusively). Google Wallet will continue to function as a payment method, and will be one way that you can fund your Android Pay transactions.
