How to remote wipe an Android phone?

How does the remote wipe feature work on Android phones? I know how to do it with an iPhone in case it is lost or stolen, and would like to set up my daughter’s Android phone so she can do it too. It’s an LG with Android 4.4.
On most Android devices, you can set up your device for remote lock/wipe, as well as finding it if misplaced, at Google's Android Device Manager website: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager. Once you've set up your device, you can go to that webs to remotely lock or wipe it, similar to how Apple's remote wipe lock works with its Find My Phone feature at iCloud.com.

Note that some Android manufacturers, such as Samsung, offer their own remote wipe/lock service (https://findmymobile.samsung.com/login.do) that you can use instead, but LG seems to use solely the standard Google service.
