Will Android apps work on Samsung’s new Tizen smartphone?

Samsung hasn’t released Tizen devices in the US yet, but I’m curious whether they will run Android apps, or if they will only run “Tizen” apps?

Yes, but not out of the box. You have to install a work around, according to an article on phoneArena.com:

"Tizen does not officially support Android apps, but there’s a workaround thanks to OpenMobile’s Application Compatibility Layer - which is specifically developed to allow Android apps to run on non-Android devices.

According to OpenMobile, “ACL-enabled Android apps perform as native on the Tizen operating system, with minimal latency.” When the Samsung Z1 is launched, users will be able to install OpenMobile’s ACL from the Tizen app store."

No, Android apps do not run on Tizen. Tizen is not a variation of Android such as Amazon's Fire OS but a completely independent operating system, as distinct from Android as iOS or Windows Phone are.

Thi purported feature is not available in the shipping Tizen phones. So, for now at least, this method to running Android apps in Tizen is not real.

I guess it will.
