Some of the cloud providers are figuring out ways that you can move software and operating system licenses that you have already purchased for physical machines to cloud-based instances. It is a good idea and hopefully this will catch on. After all, why should you pay for a license that you aren’t using? Granted, little in the licensing world makes common sense, but we are glad to see this happening.

So if you have existing SQL Server, SharePoint and Exchange Server licenses, you can migrate them in Google Cloud:
https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/operating-systems/windows#microsoft_license_mobility

This is actually more generous than what Microsoft allows for Azure, ironically. Here is the fine print on their license migration policy:
http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/license-mobility/

You’ll notice that they say “Windows Server, the Windows desktop operating system, and desktop application products are not included in (the Microsoft version of) License Mobility.” Sigh.
