How to show number row on Android keyboard?

How can I get the on-screen Android keyboard to display numbers at the same time as letters (in the same way a laptop keyboard does)? It would be much more convenient than switching back and forth between the letters/numbers keyboards.
Michael has a good answer, but here's a link to the Android support site in case you need additional information:
First make sure you have the official Google Android Keyboard app. Get it here if not (you will also need to set it up if you just now installing it, but the app will walk you through that):

Go to your apps and find the Google Keyboard app (don’t go into device settings, go to the actual app). Open the app, then go to APPEARANCE AND LAYOUTS>CUSTOM INPUT STYLES. As a bonus, you can enable material design while you are in the appearance and layout section if you want. In “custom input styles” click on the little “+” button at the top right. Choose English for your language and PC for the layout, then hit “add.” It will ask if you want to enable the new settings; select “enable.” Toggle on English (PC) in "active input methods," and you should be good to go.

You might want to try the Google Android Keyboard for a bit before you switch. Unlike many older keyboards, the numbers are at the top of the keyboard, you just have to long press to select them. I personally prefer it to the PC style keyboard, but give them both a try and see which you like better.
