Why is there no offline playback option for Netflix?

It would be nice to be able to store movies on my phone or tablet when I’m at home using WiFi, so I could watch them later without using up my mobile data allowance or when I’m in a poor service area. Is there any chance that Netflix will make offline viewing an option in the future instead of keeping it all streaming?

I guess you should never say never….but Netflix says never. Literally. During an interview with TechRadar, Netflix’s Director of Corporate Communication and Technology, Cliff Edwards, said, “It’s never going to happen.” http://www.techradar.com/news/video/netflix-offline-viewing-is-never-going-to-happen--1277413#null

I’m sure it would cause them lots of problems with licensing content - studios aren’t going to want you to be able to (1) hang onto a copy of their content indefinitely, and (2) figure out how to make a copy of that content to share with the world for free.
