How to make SkyDrive files available offline?

How can I access and edit files that are on SkyDrive when I’m offline? I would like to be able to edit documents when I’m not online, then have the edited version sync and update the next time I am connected to SkyDrive. I’m using a Windows 8.1 laptop.
Alternatively, for a more granular access to specific files and folders use the desktop OneDrive tools.

In Windows Explorer in Windows 8.1, when connected to a network where you can access OneDrive (the new name for SkyDrive), right click on the folder you want to sync to your PC and choose "Make available offline". Wait for sync to complete before you go offline.

You can also do this for specific files if you prefer.

"1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings. (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then clickSettings.)
2. Tap or click Options, and then turn on Access all files offline."
