How to fix YLOD (yellow light of death) on PS3?

With all the family members over for the Thanksgiving holiday, we decided to fire up the old PS3 and play some Madden football. Unfortunately, when I tried to start it up I got the flashing yellow light aka yellow light of death (YLOD). This is the first version of the PS3, the “fat”, that plays PS2 games as well, so I’d rather fix it than replace it. How difficult is it to repair, and is this something that I could fix myself?

It’s often caused by solder cracking due to repeated expansion/contraction of the printed circuit board over time. If you are feeling adventurous, it’s a not all that difficult to reflow the chips and fix it yourself. I assume that you are long past any warranty, so you don’t have to worry about voiding it.
Here is a good step-by-step guide. http://www.jameco.com/jameco/workshop/diy/ps3repair.html

This YouTube video has instructions on how to fix it without opening your PS3:
