What does laptop free fall protection do to protect a laptop?

I occasionally see laptop free-fall protection listed as a feature in new laptops. What does it do to protect a laptop that is dropped? Is it actually a valuable feature, or just marketing hype?

Free fall protection for all intensive purposes is ment to attempt to protect your HDD from a fall when its RUNNING. It does this by utilizing accelerometers which when engaged tell the HDD to  disengage the reader heads preventing a head crash. This only works while the HDD is running however. Free fall protection does nothing to lessen the jarring impact your computer will go through. In all actuality, it's all about how your laptop lands that will be the difference between life and death for the system.
